Yesterday I came across very good post on Google Plus shared by my good friend +Kenneth Manesse Sr. that had a video tutorial on why and how you should edit your Hangouts On Air (HOA) shows to make them more appealing and take the boring factor right of your presentations or interviews.

The content of the post was very good so I decided to share it here, but I promised to write a follow up article in this blog, because I had a lot of extra information I think you should know when it comes on using this strategy.

Hangouts On Air, James Bond Style

To approach this discussion I gonna separate this post into 4 parts:

  1. What to consider before editing.
  2. Number one mistake people make when deciding to edit the show.
  3. Quick optimization nuggets after video have been edited.
  4. Don't stop there: Extra video marketing ideas.

So, are you ready? Let's do this!....

WOW! That just sounded like we gonna go Rambo on somebody! LOL!

1. What To Consider Before Editing Your Hangout On Air.

Before going all James Bond on your clips to try to improve how the content was presented, we need to discuss a few elements of this strategy that can boost or kill your YouTube marketing campaign. Here they are:

  • If you replace the all video with the new edited version, the marketing and optimization process it also re-starts. Is just what happen with any new video, you need to optimize it and promote it to get people to watch it and to rank on Google search results.
  • You loose the marketing benefit of a regular HOA. If you did all the basic steps to promote your HOA with a Google Plus Event, posting it on your blog, getting people to embed the video, or re-share it on their G+ profiles or other social platforms... You new uploaded video don't have any of that push, so promoting it is going to be a little bit more work.
  • Before even touching the clip, you need to make sure your don't edit too much and take the natural flow of a real human interaction. For example: If there was an error that actually help the members and viewers have a laugh or learn something new, you might want to leave that part untouched.
  • If you are a busy small business owner or HOA show host, this process can be a big distraction from your main focus. Which should be growing your business and getting more clients. This task can be a little time consuming, specially if your shows goes for 1 hour or more.

2. Number one mistake people make when deciding to edit the show.

If after watching the clip and checking your options you decide to go ahead and edit the show, here is the tutorial from the original post, that shows you how to do just that and +Steven Washer also reveals a few extra tips and reasons why you want to improve your original work:

I hope you enjoy the tutorial and got some great advice from it, I know I did!

Now, this didn't answer your your question, what's the biggest mistake people make when trying to improve their clips?

The answer is simple: They take down the original HOA and replace it with the new upload.

Like I said  before, you already went through a whole promotion process to get an audience for your presentation, then you will erase the video just because it had a few hiccups? Come on?...

Instead you should leave that video alone, and upload the second version which will give you more exposure and visibility on relevant search results. Its about about leveraging your content and make it work hard for you, not the other way around.

3. Quick optimization nuggets after the Hangout On Air have been edited.

I have another video below by a good friend of mine and video marketing expert +Ronnie Bincer filled with some great SEO (search engine optimization) advice specially design for video content. But, before you watch it, I wanna give you the full scoop on how to leverage the two videos you have now on YouTube.

The only thing you should do is target one to your main keywords, and the second one to your second best keywords.. This way you can expand your reach on Google search. For example: If the first one is targeting "Best Toyota Dealer In Worcester MA", you can have the second one target "Used Toyota Dealer In Worcester County".

Here is the presentation by Ronnie:

That was some 12 minutes well spend, don't you agree?...

4. Don't stop there: Extra video marketing ideas.

I found a wonderful Infographic with some great stats, facts and tips to help your improve your video traffic and responses:

Now that you have some extra tips, know what to do before editing your Google Plus Hangouts On Air, and  you have a few tips to help you promote it successfully, the only thing to do is to go and take some action right away and if you need help don't forget to contact +Yifat Cohen the +G+GoTo Gal. Well, not before resharing this post, but only if you think it was helpful enough.

Till my next post! Cheers! :o)

  1. Great information!
I love that you remind everyone that downloading, editing and uploading your hangout again causes the loss of all the marketing juice you've invested in your Hangout.

    1. Thank you very much for the feedback Ethos. I think many marketers and video broadcasters forget that you will kill your marketing efforts if you delete the original Hangout video.

  2. Hey Luis, great info here in this post.
I've got a situation that may be a bit different... if you promote your HOA show inside a Google Plus Event, then you won't have to loose much if any marketing Juice when you make Edits.

You can have the Live HOA show in the event, then edit the video and replace the Video shown in the Event to now be using the edited version. That is of course if you are OK promoting the live activity/post live video on Google Plus. Now it is still possible as well to promote the HOA on your site instead of an Event, then swap out the edited version on your site (replacing the Live HOA embed with the edited video embed).

The main issue here is that you just can't do much editing of the HOA after it is done and maintain the URL that was promoted for the show.

    1. Indeed That's a good way to safe some of your marketing efforts, but still a lost. Specially for those that take their video marketing campaigns to the next level by doing multi-promotions for the event page, the video link on Youtube, etc., you might want to leave the video alone.

Also if other people already embedded your video on their site, if you deleted those videos become obsolete, and you might get some people upset for doing that. That's actually the reason I don't re-share or embed some people's hangouts, because they focus on the edit, and the original gets deleted.

  3. Four arguments in favor of editing your HOA:

    1. Think of the HOA as a rough draft and the edited version as a polished finished product.

    2. People are busy, You respect their time if you edit out the bad and keep only the good.

    3. HOAs have a pretty short shelf life as it is. Six months from now viewers will be more likely to view an edited 20-minute information dense HOA than sit through 60-minutes of mostly banter and happy talk.

    4. You're right Luis, it takes a huge amount of time to properly edit a HOA, so why not take a smidgen more time to create a series of 3-minute "golden nuggets" to add even more value to the HOA.

I really like your idea of keeping the original HOA, but then also giving viewers the option to click through to a new, improved and shorter version if they so desire.
